SPLC Welcomes the “Traveling While Black” Exhibit to the Civil Rights Memorial Center
Exhibit virtually depicts the dangers of Black travel from the Jim Crow era to today
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Civil Rights Memorial Center (CRMC), a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) will feature the Traveling While Black (TWB) project through January 22, 2023.
Whether in their homes or on the road, there were very few safe spaces for Black people in the United States. From the Great Migration in the early 1900s to the travel restrictions and general opposition toward people of color during the Jim Crow South and the Jane Crow North, TWB explores more than a century of travel that shaped the Black experience.
By using high-concept documentary and virtual reality technology to immerse participants into the terrifying world of the United States during legal segregation, the decision to install the TWB exhibit at the CRMC is part of the museum’s larger mission to delve deep into the roots and continuing dangers of systemic racism.
“TWB examines Black travel by those deemed outcasts in their own country - not only historically but also via modern day experiences,” says Tafeni English, director of the CRMC. “We hope that this exhibit inspires visitors to become change agents as they think critically about race and learn how people continue to be mistreated solely based on the color of their skin.”
