Amicus Brief
Republican National Committee v. State Election Board
As Georgia voters cast early ballots in the state’s January 2021 U.S. Senate runoff elections amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a Republican Party lawsuit was filed to, among other issues, close ballot drop boxes after business hours. The SPLC filed an amicus brief with other voting rights groups in support of defendants.
The plaintiffs’ suit sought to “restrict voters’ avenues for casting their ballots on the thinnest of legal and factual pretexts,” according to the brief. It also noted that the lawsuit’s request for county registrars to livestream video from drop box locations would “shamelessly open the door to intimidation of voters and election workers.”
A Fulton County judge dismissed the lawsuit on Dec. 24, 2020.
